Further more under Spanish Law (Real Decreto 366/2005), cylinders are due an annual visual inspection and every 5 years a hydrostatic test. We offer the full range of services carried out by our fully trained, competent and authorised technicians.

Lanzarote Dive Centre is your One Stop Dive Shop for all your cylinder and valve servicing and periodic testing in Lanzarote. Island Watersports SL and our technicians are fully licensed with Industria. Paul is also trained by the highly regarded organisation, ASSET (Association of Scuba Engineers & Technicians).

Visual Inspection in Lanzarote

Visual inspection of a cylinder being carried out

IMPORTANT
If your cylinder is compromised before the due date, perhaps due to fire damage, being dropped, or damage to the cylinder valve, then you should get it inspected before using it again, and tell the testing station the reason for requesting the inspection early.

Visual Inspection

Minimum Annual Test

An annual visual test is carried out to inspect the cylinder for any damage, deterioration or corrosion that affects the integrity and safety of the cylinder and its valve.

This test is a detailed visual inspection of the cylinder both internally and externally that includes, bulges, dents, cuts, gouges, generalized corrosion, localized corrosion and thread damage against set failure criteria.

The procedure for a visual inspection is as follows:
- Removal of the valve, cylinder boot and net.
- Inspection of the exterior of the cylinder and check the cylinder markings.
- Inspection of the interior of the cylinder including the neck and threads, using a special endoscope.
- The valve is checked for smooth operation and its serial number.
- Valves may also require periodic maintenance, just like scuba diving regulators.
- If no corrosion or damage is detected then the cylinder is reassembled.
- A sticker indicating the month and year of the inspection and the expiry date is placed on the cylinder.
- If corrosion or damage is detected, then the inspector will decide the appropriate action required and you will be informed.
- Corrosion can be treated by degrees of shot blasting.

Cylinders that pass the visual inspection will have a sticker on them and you will be issued a certificate for your records.

Cost: € 15,00 / cylinder

Hydrostatic Inspection

Minimum 5 years Test

A hydrostatic test is required a minimum of every 5 years and tests the elasticity of the cylinder.

The test is carried out using a hydrostatic testing machine, which is a water filled high pressure chamber.

- The cylinder is completly immersed in water within the testing machine.
- The pressure is increased to five thirds and of it´s it's maximum working pressure.
- This is sufficient to expand the cylinder slightly and the displaced water is channelled into a marked measuring tube.
- If the expansion of the cylinder is within acceptable limits (<5%), then it has passed the test.
- If not, then the cylinder has failed the test and must not be refilled.

After pressure testing has been completed, cylinders that have passed will be thoroughly dried, then stamped with the current month and year and the test centre's registered stamp.

Cost: € 25,00 / cylinder

Shot Blaster

Cylinder Cleaning

Shot Blaster

Shot blasting is the preferred method to clean the interior of cylinders.

Not only is it much quicker than rumbling or tumbling, it more importantly does a more thorough job of removing the corrosion, rust and general contamination without removing the base material of the cylinder.

Shot blasting uses metal shot, steel grit, that is introduced into the cylinder at high pressure to clean the interior. Any pitting in the cylinder is deep cleaned allowing the defects to be clearly seen.

For those cylinders that are particularly rusty, they may require 2 or even 3 cycles of shot blasting.

Cost: € 19,00 / cylinder
